Description

A savory and slightly sweet dish, Chinese Onion Pepper Steak combines tender beef strips with crisp green bell peppers and onions in a rich sauce made from soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and brown sugar. It’s a quick and flavorful meal perfect for any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds beef strips
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced thick
  • 1/2 onion, minced thickly
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prep the Beef: In a large bowl, season the beef strips with garlic powder, ground ginger, and black pepper.
  2. Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and cook until they are browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the sliced green bell pepper and minced onion. Sauté until they are just tender but still crisp.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
  5. Combine: Return the beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables. Stir to combine.
  6. Thicken the Sauce: Cook over medium heat until the sauce has thickened to your liking, stirring frequently.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, you can adjust the amount of cornstarch.
  • Feel free to add more vegetables like sliced carrots or snap peas for added crunch and nutrition.
